Description
Manatee Children’s Services will celebrate its 39th birthday with the free, family-friendly event “39 and Holding… Pinwheels” on April 29, 2016, from 5 to 7 p.m. Blue pinwheels are the symbol for Child Abuse Awareness Month, which is the month of April.
The “big blue birthday celebration” will include hamburgers, hot dogs, refreshments, arts and crafts, cookie decorating stations, music, and agency information. An awards ceremony honoring Maj. Connie Shingledecker as the Det. James B. Wischer, Jr., Child Advocate of the Year recipient will follow.
Maj. Shingledecker will be recognized for her upcoming retirement and longstanding career as a 39-year veteran law enforcement officer with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. The Child Advocate of the Year award is in honor of Det. James B. Wischer, Jr., of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. Det. Wischer is an outspoken advocate for child abuse prevention in the community and authored the book The Boy Who Never Cried Wolf, in which he detailed his experiences as a child sexual and physical abuse survivor. Det. Wischer will also be attending the awards ceremony.
