Job Description

Environmental Specialist: Coordination of water quality and seagrass field sampling programs including logistics, quality assurance and record-keeping.  Tasks include field work, scheduling equipment and personnel; liaison to lab contract coordinators, field data sheets, chain of custody, field instrument calibration, preparation and repair; quality assurance; data entry; data screening; record-keeping in paper and electronic forms; analysis, mapping and reporting. Outreach to the community in regards to water quality and related matters including contacting stakeholders; producing printed, video and still images; public speaking to groups and to media; working with outreach consultants; social media and websites; representing the County at environmental events; event coordination as needed.  The objective is to encourage and support community actions that improve water quality, the aquatic environment and reduce the impact of stormwater runoff.

Duties:

Environmental Monitoring:  Water Quality Field Sampling Logistics and Field Sampling: Ensure smooth operation of the Surface Water Quality Monitoring Program through the coordination and scheduling of field sampling crews and Quality Assurance Officers. Ability to adapt to a changing set of projects and priorities.  Strict quality standards will be maintained in all aspects of preparation, sampling, documentation, post-calibration, and data reporting. Sampling will routinely include discrete samples, metering, careful documentation of field observations, accurate GPS measurements, photography, and coordination with contract laboratories.  Projects may sometimes involve event mean concentration sampling, biological monitoring, sediment sampling, telemetry, flow measurements, weather monitoring or other techniques.

Seagrass Monitoring Program: Coordinate and conduct seagrass monitoring throughout Sarasota County. Training of staff and volunteers in proper monitoring techniques. Data management. Develop educational and training materials. Volunteer recruitment and management. Program promotion through various media outlets.

Data management, Recordkeeping and Reporting: Tasks may include data entry, screening and correcting errors, compliance with standards, filing and preservation of paper and electronic records, mapping, data analysis, Data management may include uploading to databases, screening for errors, making corrections, reporting, and presentation of activities and results to the public or professionals.  Streamlining of methods increase efficiency, as needed.

Community Action:  Educate, support and encourage the community to participate in projects that enhance the environment.  Reach out to various organizations, groups, neighborhoods, and schools.  Build relationships and raise environmental awareness relating to Sarasota’s water resources. Use tools such as the Sarasota Water Atlas website, County website, social media, publications, videos and events.  Work with consultants to develop outreach programs.  Support the Neighborhood Environmental Stewardship Team (NEST) Program.  Support compliance with Total Maximum Daily Load and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System programs.  Focus on TMDL priority watersheds.  Conduct substantial seagrass educational outreach including an annual event or multiple events.

Minimum Qualifications:  A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university in one of the biological or physical sciences, Environmental Engineering or a related field and two (2) years experience of professional experience.  A Master’s Degree may substitute for one year of professional experience.  Progressively responsible professional experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college degree.  

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Experience with water quality sampling, technology, lab practices and quality assurance is preferred.
  • GIS abilities preferred.
  • Public speaking and media relations experience is preferred. 
  • SCUBA and boat handling skills preferred.  Florida Safe Boating Card preferred.
  • SCUBA certified preferred.
  • Experience in data analysis preferred.
