Job Description

Emergency Services Media Relations Officer (Official Job Title:  Communications Associate II):  This is an advanced, professional level position supporting the communication needs for Sarasota County Emergency Services. This position is responsible for the department’s media engagements and communication strategies. Consulting with Emergency Services and Fire Department administration to plan, coordinate, create and implement multiple forms of communications. This position takes daily direction from the county’s Communications Department’s manager and reports to the Emergency Services director. This position resides in the Communications Department providing synergy between countywide initiatives and department-specific messaging.


Serves as a Media Relations Officer in an on-call capacity for Sarasota County Emergency Services (Fire Department and Emergency Management). As the department’s Media Relations Officer, media responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing media engagement plans, writing and distributing media releases/alerts, maintaining and curating the Emergency Services social media accounts.
  • Responding to media queries, facilitating media pitches, providing on-site media relations (Public Information Officer responsibilities) support (arranging press conferences, provide tours, photographic support, etc.), and working with media representatives to promote timely and accurate media coverage.

Coordinates department’s multiple communications projects supporting the department’s mission, goals, programs and services. Develops and maintains communications plans, schedules, monitors, tracks and reports on projects. Serves as the department’s communications specialist in strategizing and implementing communications plans, techniques, methods and campaigns. Works with Emergency Services staff to identify and then develop positive storylines to promote department’s operations, programs and services through various communication mechanisms.

Develops concepts, scripts and all other necessary elements to produce and edit video segments and programs that effectively communicate information about the department for broadcast and social media use. 


Minimum Qualifications:  A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Relations, Mass Communications or related field  with five (5) years of related experience. – OR - A Master’s Degree in one of the above or related fields with three (3) or more years of related experience. Eight (8) years of related professional experience may substitute for the required education.
