Job Description

Planner III: Provide advanced professional land use planning in the review and processing of rezones, special exceptions, comprehensive plan, large scale developments, Developments of Regional Impact (DRIs) Developments of Critical Concerns (DOCCs), Developer Agreements, and other planning and intergovernmental projects, and to present factual findings and reports for these projects to the public, Planning Commission and Board of County Commissioners.  

Duties:

  • Review and process rezones, special exceptions, comprehensive plan, large scale developments, DRI and DOCC petitions, assist applicants and the public, prepares staff reports, public hearing packets, adhere to eGenda timeline criteria.

  • Prepares and makes presentations to the Planning Commission and the Board of County Commissioners.

  • Conducts land use and special study analysis and/or Neighborhood Workshop and CIVICS participation as delegated or assigned.

  • Participates in neighborhood workshop, preliminary and Pre-Application meetings with applicants.

  • Oversees progress of assigned teams; oversees completion of projects assigned timely and on budget.  Makes recommendations on projects.

  • Acts as a technical advisor/mentor and serves as a lead worker; provides staff assistance; Provides feedback/assistance with performance management, promotions and other personnel actions. 

  • Serves as a subject matter expert.

  • Develop performance goals and measures.

  • Accurately post billable hours into LIMS program.

 Minimum Qualifications:   A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Planning, Geography, or a major recognized by the American Planning Association as “related”, and six years’ experience in the field of land use and/or public facilities planning. A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Urban and Regional Planning or a major recognized by the American Planning Association as “related” can substitute for one year of non-supervisory experience.  Progressively responsible professional experience can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college degree.  AICP Certification is required at time of hire or 18 months from date of hire. 

Preferred Qualifications:   AICP certification is highly preferred.  Demonstrated leadership experience in large and complex projects.  Project Management certification is preferred.  FEMA training is preferred.  GIS Mapping experience a plus.
