Description
Dr. Erin Dean, Associate Professor of Anthropology at New College of Florida, will discuss her work coordinating the Sarasota Oral History Project on April 26 at 5:30 pm at Manatee Village Historical Park.
The Sarasota Oral History Project has been collecting stories in the community for almost ten years. Student interviewers partner with community elders and experts to explore the diverse experiences of Sarasota residents, past and present, and then create unique audio-visual presentations. In this talk, Dr. Dean will discuss the history, structure, and goals of the project, reflect on the process and outcomes, and show examples of these dynamic oral history presentations.
Dr. Dean is an environmental anthropologist who, in addition to coordinating the Sarasota Oral History Project, researches conservation and development in East Africa. Her recent publications include articles in the journals Human Organization and the Journal of Contemporary African Studies.
This talk will take place on Thursday, April 26, 2018 starting at 5:30pm at Manatee Village Historical Park. It will run approximately 45 minutes. A reception with light refreshments will follow. Manatee Village will close at 7:00pm.
