Surviving Sarasota is one of several historical novels set in Southwest Florida written by Clarissa Thomasson. The story is based on the lives of William and Mary Jane Whitaker who established their homestead at the high Yellow Bluffs on Sarasota Bay in 1851. The couple braved the rugged Florida frontier and survived frightening raids during the Seminole and Civil Wars. The Whitaker family made local history with a series of 'firsts" which the author will disclose. Miss Thomasson will also share her favorite quote by Mary Jane Whitaker when the pioneer stood her ground against the enemy. Admission is free; seating is on a first come, first-served basis. Ms. Thomasson won the 2005 Florida Trust for Historic Preservation Award for her contributions to Florida history through her articles for Yesterday in Florida magazine.
