Inventories, organizes and maintains equipment and materials. Assists with the day-to-day oversight and maintenance of the instructional laboratory facilities Assists faculty with curriculum development and directly supports the implementation of laboratory educational activities. Assists in the compliance with safety protocols and programs defined by the College, the Natural Science Department and by state of federal agencies. Provides direct training and supervision of student assistants within the laboratories. Applicants may be asked to demonstrate any or all of the following duties: • Provides technical and practical laboratory support to all Science laboratory courses offered at the College. This includes but is not limited to the following disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Anatomy/Physiology, Interdisciplinary Science, Biotechnology and Physics/Physical Science. • Prepares, organizes and coordinates the materials and supplies for laboratory classes. Creates, develops and updates documents such as preparation sheets, activity protocols and various teaching aids that allow for the efficient management of lab materials and effective preparation of lab activities for faculty and students. Oversees quality assurance and quality control of all educational lab activities. • Assists faculty with the development and implementation of instructional laboratory activities. Conducts technical lab work, collects results, provides analysis and recommendations, troubleshoots as needed and collaborates with faculty to determine best practices and to implement efficient and effective procedures and processes. • Coordinates the use of laboratory equipment, materials and shared resources to meet daily instructional requirements. Collaborates with faculty and team members to meet lab activity scheduling needs. Works with faculty to adjust activity schedules when necessary. Acts to provide alternative solutions and recommendations when anticipated timing conflicts occur with shared resources. • Maintains laboratory equipment, assuring readiness for daily use. Instructs and supports faculty, staff and student assistants with the proper use of equipment. Researches equipment issues, troubleshoots and uses practical and technical knowledge to take corrective action for mal-functioning equipment. Reports the need for repair or maintenance to the Manager, Natural Science Lab or designee as necessary. • Prepares laboratories daily and properly maintains the laboratory facility to facilitate a safe, secure, clean and productive working environment. Acts as liaison with other College departments such as Facilities, IT, Public Safety for building and facility maintenance, upgrade and/or repair. Reports equipment failure to appropriate College department and Manager, Natural Science Lab. • Acts as a lead, front-line employee to oversee the day-to-day operations within the laboratory facilities. Collaborates with other lab staff team members to ensure the daily operations within each lab area runs smoothly and effectively. Reports any needs to Manager, Natural Science Lab or designee. • Assists with the acquisition, installation, maintenance and movement of equipment, furniture and other laboratory items needed for instruction or general operations of the lab. Sets priorities appropriately to best meet the needs of faculty, students and team members. • Assesses the need for laboratory materials and supplies, reporting specific needs to Manager, Natural Science Lab or designee. Conducts inventories, identifies specific materials needed, submits requests, receives and manages supplies, and maintains inventory of laboratory materials, chemical and biological agents as well as minor and capital equipment. Updates inventory records as required. • Provides laboratory orientation, training and instruction with regards to technology, lab equipment, proper use of equipment, laboratory procedures, lab operations and safety to faculty, staff and student assistants as needed. • Acts as lead supervisor for student assistants, providing training, assigning work, providing direction and professional development opportunities, offering corrective instruction and evaluating performance as needed. Assures that all safety measures are followed by student employees. • Assists with identification of minor and capital equipment needs within the instructional laboratories, reporting such needs to be included in department budget proposals. Identifies list of needed equipment, provides justifications and recommendations to be reviewed as part of the budget proposal process. • Works with external vendors to identify options and availability of materials and supplies. Obtains material specifications, pricing and purchasing information as needed. Identifies alternative materials if required. Reports recommendations to Manager, Natural Science Lab or designee.
